Milk Deal Sours For Cream Of Crop

Four prominent dairy executives were sentenced recently to "do public penance" for fixing milk prices in Arizona. U.S. District Judge Carl Muecke said traditional sentences would be like "spitting in a blast furnace." He said any fine levied would just go to the government, and, "I would rather see this money be utilized within this community."

The four were sentenced to work for the Salvation Army, St. Mary's Food Bank, and the St. Vincent de Paul dining room. Their sentences will last six months. In addition the milk companies they represent agreed to donate food, equipment and services, equal to fines of $175,000 to community service organizations.
