PETITION FOR ROBERT WILLIAMS

We, the undersigned students, faculty and staff members of the University of Michigan, and other residents of the Ann Arbor area, declare our strong protest of Governor Milliken's decision to extradite Robert F. Williams to the state of North Carolina. We strongly doubt the likelihood of personal safety for Mr. Williams in North Carolina or the likelihood of a fair trial there since he is hated and, feared as a black man who stood up for the rights of his people and suffered assassination attempts and threats because of what he believed in. We call on Governor Milliken to reverse his decision in accordance with michigan's tradition of non-extradition of politically-involved fugitives. Both Robert F. Williams's life and human justice are at stake in Governor Milliken's decision.
