Presidential hopeful Harold Hughes was one of three Senators who faced a knife-wielding heroin addict in a Harlem tenement basement June 25. The other two were Jacob Javits and Richard Schweiker.

During a tour for Hughes' Senate subcommittee on alcohol and narcotics, the three Senators and accompanying newsmen surprised six addicts preparing to shoot up in the coal bin of a Harlem tenement, known in the neighborhood as a "shooting gallery."

In the darkness, their presence went undetected until a newsman turned on a light. "Don't panic, it ain't a bust," yelled Marjorie Doxen, staffer in a drug clinic across the street, but one addict pulled a knife and told the group to "Get the fuck out of here." Hughes and the others fled to the streets.

Earlier, the Senators had watched from a clinic window as a 16-year old bought five packets of heroin across the street. The packets were handed to Hughes.

Meanwhile, the government continues to request more money for more agents in the effort to fight "organized crime" and heroin. Why are they having such a hard time fighting heroin when it's so easily available? Why do they REALLY want more agents? Stay tuned to the SUN for further developments.
