HRP’s Bus Helps City Gain Voters

Approximately 150 new city voters were registered by the City Clerk’s office this week, due largely to a shuttle bus service run between Waterman Gymnasium and City Hall by the Human Rights Party.

The HRP said it conducted the drive in protest of the refusal by City Council Republicans and the city administration to allow voter registration to take place at Waterman as students enroll for the fall session at the U-M.

In a statement, the HRP claimed "the current Republican regime in City Hall fears that comprehensive voter registration and a large turnout at the polls next spring would throw it (Republican Party) out of office.”

City Administrator Sylvester Murray turned down registration at Waterman. He acknowledged it should be done there, but also said it should be conducted in all areas of the city, regardless of which party might gain an advantage. Republicans refused to attend a special council meeting called by Democrats to consider the issue.
